Is it time?

Are you at the point where it is time to stop delaying the inevitable and paint the roof? You may be wondering what signs signify the time has come. If this is you, and you need some assistant to determine if it is really time to paint the roof then check out our guide.

Signs your roof needs painting.

  • Is the paint chipping, bubbling or coming off in large patches?
  • Is there dirt, moss and mould present?
  • Do you know when it was last repainted? – over 10 years ago?
  • Is there rust starting to appear on your roof?
  • Is the current paint fading?

These are all great signs to suggest that it’s time to start prepping your roof!

What do I need to do to Prep the roof?

Depending on the condition of your roof will determine the cause of action. If it is just dirt, mould and mildew then give the roof a good wash down. You can use a special roof wash available from most hardware and paint stores. It is also recommended to apply a moss and mould spray like Resene Moss and Mould Killer or Dulux Precision Stain and Mould Blocker to prevent this from coming back.

If your roof needs some TLC, then it will be likely that this task will take longer. Scrubbing and cleaning the roof as above is the way to go however you may find it will take a few goes to get it paint ready!

When is the best time of year to Paint my roof?

You will want to perform this task towards the end of Spring and early summer when the weather is warm enough to dry the paint in time before dew starts to fall. It is also a good idea to wait until the days are longer to allow sufficient time to complete the task. Resene suggests the ideal temperature is 15-20 degrees, humidity 70-80%, and a very gentle breeze. A few great rules Resene recommends is If the washing on the line isn’t drying then neither will your paint and don’t paint in direct sunlight or extremely hot weather – a cloudy or overcast day is ideal!
